The airport has been named after former U. S. Senator Jake Garn from Utah. His father was a pioneer in the aviation industry, and had his first pilot's license signed by Wilbur Wright. Senator Garn was a Navy Pilot prior to his days in national politics and was a team member on one space shuttle mission.

The airport is located in an industrial zone, providing for over 2,000 acres of airport related businesses. There is a possibility of creating a Foreign Trade Zone at the airport, thereby creating a potentially huge attraction for international business.

The airport was designed by Armstrong Engineering, a Colorado engineering firm specializing in airports, who worked with the Federal Aviation Administration to receive full approval for a runway up to 10,000 feet long.

The airport is designed to accommodate residents and business with taxi-way access. Homeowners can drive their car to a garage in front of their home, and taxi their aircraft to a hangar in the rear of their lot. Businesses and corporations can have the same convenient fly-in access.

The airport industry is currently undergoing huge changes. The new, light and efficient jet engines have reduced the cost of ownership of jet aircraft. In addition, the effects of the 9/11 tragedy caused some restrictions to airspace use. Further, the common delays at commercial airports have made smaller airports, and private air travel more appealing. These industry changes have encouraged large business owners to seek air transportation other than the typical scheduled airlines.

The FAA is working on a new system for managing small aircraft transportation. SATS (Small Aircraft Transportation System) will soon be implemented and will include a network of smaller airports, like Jake Garn Airport. These changes in the industry will create a demand on developments like Jake Garn Airport.
